From Software to Lampshades: How I Found My Creative Path on the Costa Tropical

If you had told me five years ago that I’d be handcrafting lampshades in a sun-drenched atelier on the coast of southern Spain, I would have laughed. But life—especially post-Brexit life—has a way of nudging you toward paths you never expected.

I originally moved here to work remotely for a Spanish software company. I’d always dreamed of doing something creative, and I'd fallen completely in love with this idyllic stretch of the Costa Tropical. The blue-green sea, the dramatic mountain backdrop, the easy rhythm of the days—it was impossible not to imagine a new kind of life here.

When the company was sold and our team was dissolved, I found myself at a crossroads: return to the UK and chase stability… or stay, take a chance, and follow that long-held dream. The timing felt right, and in May 2024, I opened the doors to Lucas Miles Atelier.

The Danish Couple That Changed Everything

I hadn't even officially opened when my first customers walked through the door. I was quietly stitching a handmade lampshade and sorting through fabrics when a Danish couple happened upon the atelier. They asked what I was working on and immediately fell in love with one of the vintage lamps I'd just restored.

To my surprise, they bought the lamp, the new shade, and two matching cushions on the spot. My payment system wasn’t even up and running yet, but they were patient and kind. That sale was more than a transaction—it was a sign that I was on the right track. They likely have no idea how much their visit meant to me, but it gave me the confidence I needed to keep going.

The Beauty of “Make Do and Mend”

My work is grounded in the belief that creativity and sustainability go hand in hand. I’m passionate about the “Make Do and Mend” philosophy. So many beautiful objects are tossed aside, when all they really need is a little love and imagination.

In my atelier, I restore old lamps with care—replacing the wiring, cables, switches, and connectors to meet modern safety standards—and give them a fresh identity with handmade, bespoke shades. Whenever possible, I reuse lampshade rings and frames, carefully sourced fabrics, and vintage finds from local markets. There's something incredibly rewarding about turning what others see as junk into something beautiful, useful, and full of personality.

Come Visit, Connect, or Collaborate

Whether you're already a part of this creative community or just beginning your own journey, I’d love to welcome you to the atelier. It’s more than a shop—it’s a space for curiosity, conversation, and craft.

If you have a vintage lamp that needs a new lease on life, a family heirloom gathering dust, or even just an idea you’d like to explore, I’m always happy to chat. I also host regular tufting workshops and can create bespoke lampshades tailored to your home and style.

Pop in, say hello, and see what’s on the workbench. You never know what you might find—or be inspired to create.
